The Glasshouse

The Glasshouse was a response to a self identified need/brief concerning the spaces used by senior students at a local high school. The space needed to accommodate independent and collaborative study, be accessible and promote the students learning through the environment. Importantly, the space needed to optimise use of the natural surroundings. In my design, I implemented biophilic principles and catered to these needs of the students. The Glasshouse includes indoor and outdoor spaces that facilitate study, collaboration, relaxation and socialisation. The spaces flow with lots of light, air and organic formations.  This design capitalises on the natural surroundings by using glass to lessen the divide between indoor and outdoor. This allows students to reap the intellectual and emotional benefits of the outdoors for learning. To communicate my design, I produced representations with both model making and CAD programs. I gained skills in both these areas as well as in the design processes. Iterating, site research, qualitative client research, time management were among the many skills I practised during this project.
